Women’s experiences in online spaces - particularly those of us who express feminist sentiments - are often characterised by sexist harassment and abuse. We are called bitches, whores and worse; we endure uninvited sexual comments and images, messages encouraging us to suicide, threats of violence and rape and appraisals of our bodies from men contemplating how rapeable we are.

this bitch went to 4chan and couldn't bant for shit, probably is such a loser she threatened to call police so the 4channers reacted by doxxing her. Most didn't do anything anything illegal. She even thinks she should be able to ban them from saying things about her, wtf?

The only thing i agree with is that being doxxed must suck and should be illegal. A right to internet anonimity should be protected.

As predicted, the police said they could do very little and referred me on. There would be no consequences for these men, no investment of police time or resources. The best I could hope for was for the website to be taken down, which after several months it finally was.

How long ago did all this happen?

Because just 5 minutes of Google Fu throws up the following:

In 2013, the Australian Government published the first National Plan to Combat Cybercrime. The plan contained key priorities for development and further action including ... building capacity and capability of law enforcement agencies.

The Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) ... was a key initiative under the 2013 National Plan to Combat Cybercrime.

ACORN is easily reachable by going to a regional police website - e.g. Victoria's - and when you get onto ACORN there is a whole page devoted to Cyber-bullying, which states:

Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) it is an offence to use the internet, social media or a telephone to menace, harass or cause offence.

So notice that even before ACORN, there was a 1995 precedent for identifying online offences of the kind she's making a formal complaint about.

The site even contains extensive advice about how to stay safe online while using social media.

Experiences with the police aren't always the most positive and maybe it really is true that she was dismissed by the particular police officer she addressed her complaint to ... but if that is what happened, there were lots of other avenues open to her she could have tried. And you would think that someone who is a feminist activist would be fully aware of such information.

I will always adhere to internet rule 30: there are no girls on the internet.

That is of course to say, there are no guys either. We're all, as far as each other are concerned, genderless brains in the digital void. If you bring gender into it, you clearly do so for a reason. If you are a woman online making a big deal of your gender, you are announcing to the world that you expect others to behave differently toward you because of this new information.

Naturally this is met with scorn and derision.
