Let me guess, before I read it... the problem is the letters 'm', 'e' and 'n' in THAT order in the word...

and I called it. Never mind the word comes from Latin, from https://www.etymonline.com/word/menstruation:

"the period of menstruation," 1680s, from past-participle stem of Late Latin menstruare, from menstruus "monthly" (from mensis "month;" see moon (n.)) + -ation. Old English equivalent was monaðblot "month-blood." Middle English had menstrue (n.), late 14c., from Old French menstrue, from Latin menstruum. (emphasis mine)

Jed Diamond, PhD., coined the term Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) to describe the hormonal changes that accompany the cycle of a man. So if everyone has a period, why is the word menstruation so gender biased? Because of the patriarchy, that’s why. Yet another relic from an oppressive history we are trying our best to move beyond.

This reminds me of a Sliders episode long ago, perhaps it was his research data. If it's on TV it must be true, right?

Our suggestion is we change the word itself in order to make it more palatable. Something gender neutral like personstruation, or zestruation would do just fine. At the very least, differentiate menstruation from womenstruation.

You know what, call it what you wish, I don't care anymore. It's not like communication was happening before this, so nothing is lost.
