I recall reading about a year ago that there was this very creepy Ramadan program which started last year where some Communist official was supposed to be on a month-long "homestay" with certain Uyghur families. Ostensibly to forge closeness between party and people. It really sounded like a kind of especially intrusive monitoring for suspicious activities. "Creepy" is what came to mind. I mean, Jesus, why not plant microphones as well? Maybe have a potted plant in the middle of the room, "when I'm not around, just make sure you talk clearly into the flowers, comrades. Pay no attention to the occasional electronic screech."
