The rape culture in american campuses argument is so far fetched ffs, especially when most times the numbers are dramatized up the whazoo.

Isn't the stats higher during that period because the term was brought in to peoples heads around that time?

The meaning behind it most likely existed before the search terms was being logged but the term came up around the same time as the searches did.

Just speculating...

What most modern feminists (and frankly most movements right now) always fail to realize is that they operate in an economy of attention, and the attention and sympathy of the public is a finite resource.

Every time a new buzz word like rape culture or body positivity or slut shaming comes out you see massive pushes to "raise awareness" but they never transition to any other goal. Go to any college campus and ask any women's group. All they do is "raise awareness" as if anyone was as yet unaware of the existence of feminism.

Problem is, as stated, that wave always crests. The whole point, which seems lost on so many lately, is to capitalize on it before it does.
