Women and men seem to understand that as a couple somebody is going to be the primary provider while somebody is going to be the primary caregiver. It’s very rare for the stars to align and give both partners and equal shot as equal providers. So, somebody is going to assume the role of either primary provider or sole provider and secondary caregiver because you can’t usually make money and provide care to dependants so you need a life long partner to help fill in the role you can’t... this is not a toxic situation because it’s the single best method for raising mentally and physically healthy children into adulthood - how can that possibly be toxic?

The problem you’re illuminating is women’s preference to adopt the caregiver role but their reluctance to acknowledge that it was also almost entirely their choice to make. The popular political narrative is that women are not embracing their own desire to provide primary care to their family but that society forces this role on them and their preference is to work a full time job of long hours away from their family and homes because that’s what’s most important for women despite the fact that the careers they tend to gravitate to are also disturbingly caregiving in nature...
