I've been to Normandy, Bretagne, Paris and Les Vosges.

The people in Normandy were kind. If they heard you were not from France they'd try their utmost best to answer you in English, no matter how good your French may be. They want to be friendly and speak to you in a language you're more comfy in. If you show a genuine interest in something, they'll be happy to chat for hours! In Colleville-Sur-Mer for example we took pictures of the "Eglise Notre Dame", around the corner is a house with a large picture on a billboard of a family back then. We took a photo of that and an elderly lady exited the house and said hi. We talked to her in French and we discovered the people on that picture were her grandmother, mother and other family members! She invited us in to talk more but we didn't want to disturb her too much. And she's only one example out of many.

In Les Vosges the people were really, REALLY open. Once we were following a trail in La Bresse to a statue of Maria and we literaly had to walk through a young man's garden. He was just celebrating his birthday with friends and after a few laughs he asked us to stay a while, eat a bit and drink some beer before we headed off.

In Bretagne the people always say hello when you pass them on the street. They're a bit less chatty but the second you refer to them as "Bretons" instead of French, they open up and won't stop talking! They're basicly like what the Scots are to England, but in France.

Parisians however never talk to you unless they want something from you. They're also extremely curt and love to boss you around. You don't know arrogance until you've seen Paris. Doesn't help that the place is so frigging filthy. Trust me, all the monuments and cathedrals and "most romantic city of Europe" stuff ain't worth it.
