When the all-male draft was upheld as constitutional, the court's reasoning was that since women were excluded from combat positions drafting only men was okay. Now that all positions in the military are open to women, that argument goes out the window.

Aside from the equality issue, requiring young women to register for the Selective Service would have a practical benefit. Politicians and voters would be less likely to support the US's endless wars if they feared their daughters might end up getting drafted.

Oh, and Jimmy Carter actually wanted women to register for the draft, but conservatives opposed this.
