There is a group in Sweden who would like to pass a law that gives men the same rights as women in the decision to become parents. A ”legal abortion” would mean that, within the same time frame legally permitted for a woman to have an abortion, a man could now choose if he’s willing to accept the duties of fatherhood.

If a man chooses not to take financial responsibility, he also won’t be allowed to meet the child or be involved in their lives in any way.

I’ve known several men who’ve been trapped into fatherhood by women they hardly knew at the time of the pregnancy. One is now in an unloving marriage with the woman where the kids suffer greatly. Another struggles to pay maintenance for a boy he rarely sees, and has no bond with, after a woman he knew for less than two weeks decided on her own not to end the pregnancy. I’ve heard of, and actually witnessed, the seduction of financially stable men by women who wanted a baby, regardless of whether or not the man wanted it, or was willing to engage in a relationship.

I’m a woman, and consider myself what I call a “manvocate”. Maybe it’s because my father was a great man, and I experienced my mother shaming him in the years before he died because he didn’t make enough money to give her highness all she‘s entitled to. I’ve always felt that the world is too tough on men, but the inequality in regard to forced fatherhood really chaps my hide.
