It might seem irrelevant, but seeing how someone can get radacalized might help your cause. I'm a female. 2019 was the worst year of my life. I had a lot of health issues and had to quit my job. I guess I had too much free time on my hands and was on YouTube too much. My mind is already in a very bad place from being sick and I ran into some very sexist things on youtube. I grew up in an environment where I rarely heard much about gender stereotypes. I lived on the East Coast and West Coast and rarely heard anything.
The first time that I really heard sexist things was when I lived in the Midwest for a bit, and it was mostly females bashing other females. This really annoyed me, because how arrogant are you to think you are the one good woman, not like other girls.
On Youtube, hearing sexist things again made me wonder about it. I started researching online. While doing this I came across a lot of magazine and newspaper articles that portray women as very discriminated against, people have a lot of biases, and there are many articles depicting both men and women as being very biased and discriminatory or mean towards women. It was very shocking to see so many articles from mainstream newspapers and magazines like this. I want to do my own bias and discrimination studies to see if it's so bad as they portray.
One thing that improved my opinion of men was when I stopped watching American TV. I didn't even realize I had a poor opinion of men. I wasn't really self-aware on that. But the contrast that I saw, when I stopped watching TV, it was hard not to notice. I started watching Asian TV shows, mainly from Korea and China instead, and my opinion of men greatly improved after this.
I am kind of disturbed that I have residual sexism problems towards men. With the combination of seeing so many men say sexist things about themselves and about women, and then reading so many online articles, I started to have negative ideas and thinking towards men.
I have also noticed that I am not able to spot sexism against men as easily as sexism against women. I also have noticed that I have strange biases and double standards when it comes to judging men. I also noticed it's harder for me to have empathy towards men.
I have been stalking online sites where men complain about women and women complain about men. Looking at both sides. I have noticed that when men complain about their problems it's really hard for me to relate to or even understand what they are complaining about. Women have a tendency to be much more specific when they talk about their problems. Men seem to be using broad terms. I even noticed on the sex Reddit, there are a lot of double standards. If a woman complains about something, she's not seen negatively for doing so, but if a man complains about the same thing, he's a jerk.
How can I overcome this and be less sexist and fairer in my judgment of men? I think realizing that I even have a problem is a good first step because I didn't even realize I had a problem until this year. I could see counseling, read male autobiographies, I don't know. I don't have that many male relatives that live near me, if I had male relatives it might have been easier for me to relate to men. I don't know. My parents are married, I have a father, but he's a bit cold and distant and doesn't talk much to me.
Also this victim mentality is very bad for me. It makes me feel like everyone hates women. Also, since I have to find a new job. I have two degrees. One is a more male dominated industry and the other more female dominated. After reading so much negatively about the way men are treating women at work, I'm afraid look for a job with one of my degrees.
TL;DR I feel like recent events made me realize that I have sexist beliefs and unfair double standards and biased against men. How can I overcome this?
