Wow, a developed nation in 2015 lynches a person without even a trial to establish guilt for a specific crime. Part of me is still surprised, but most of me honestly isn't, because this isn't really shocking when you think about it. All the rape hysteria, listen and believe, 1 in 4, etc, places even our own communities only one spark away from erupting into mob justice.

And after reading up more on the incident, it appears that social media played a large part in fueling the tragedy. Indeed, Internet and SMS services to the area were suspended for several days following the killing, in an attempt to prevent further crimes and rioting. Colour me shocked.

Also, hundreds of girls in college uniforms led the mob, and allowed it to gain entry to the jail by acting as a human shield, but they were not present or involved in the actual beating and murder. This kind of proxy violence is as unsurprising as it is nefarious and deadly.
