Don't know about studies, but I can give you some firsthand insight into why its so commonly misinterpreted. My mother, who's somewhat of a feminist and who incorrectly believes the wrong definition of "pay gap" for this scenario, isn't super versed in politics. Most people aren't, and I think thats the problem. Even intellectual families rarely do in depth research into political matters, and often a quick google search is all that is needed to "confirm" information they have heard. With the incorrect definition floating all over major news sites and social media, it seems to just be a large instance of misinformation. I can personally confirm this, as I asked my mother her beliefs and explained what the correct definition (for the topic at hand) was, and she was convinced that this information was incorrect, as it conflicted with many "reliable" news sources and outlets. Conclusion? This belief is largely spawned by ignorance, and I personally believe the best way to combat this is through a large scale education campaign.
