'Being funny' is super infuriating advice. I've been the funny guy in every group I've ever been a part of. Funny makes you a goddamn clown unless you're also attractive. When you're attractive and funny, that makes you charming, and you're golden. When you're not attractive and funny you're nothing more than a clown for the people in your life. I'm done trying to entertain the people around me. If a clown is all I can be to you, then I'd rather be nothing.

Actually advice such as "just be yourself" really is true because it just doesn't matter if you try to behave in a specific way, your physical appearance is what ultimately deicides your success so you might as well be yourself.

I've talked to this guy. Part of his m.o. is that he doesn't believe that dating advice exists. What he means is that he hasn't found any that is both one-size-fits-all AND 100% consisting of repeatable, concrete steps. If you try to give him positive advice, you run into a point past which you just can't articulate abstractions of thought or vagueness of behavior any more concretely. And so, because he can't understand, he accuses you of having nothing to say at all.

At first I thought he was trolling. But these days, I think he's genuine and just not very good at the whole "intuition and abstract concepts in social dynamics" thing.
