Should I do STEM?

Think very carefully about what you want to do, do extensive research online about the available career paths and plan accordingly. Don't do something just because your parents pressured you into it or because you think it's in vogue, especially because you're paying for college. Don't limit yourself to STEM, if that was the only good career path then the majority of people would be homeless.

STEM is extremely broad and only a few degree programs in college under STEM would lead you to the type of stable career that you're imagining, like computer science.

Fortunately software engineering is very accessible for anyone to learn. Go look up online programming tutorials and attempt a basic project like building a CRUD app, and see if you like it.

Just remember 1 thing: if you do choose college remember its of secondary importance. Always prioritize practical out-of-classroom work.

Not unless you have a natural talent for it or a lot of time in it already, no. You will be competing with Asian, and White nerds that have been coding since they were 12 as a hobby. Then you have to know what you're doing with the internships and the interviews or research/grad school if you're going to do academia, it's a big mess really and extremely competitive and unless you're one of those precocious people I've been talking about you will be left behind. Very easy to make the 'wrong move' and be stuck while other people work for good companies and get on the right track. And never EVER do a hard science like physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc.

Serious question: Are you autistic?

Lots of people who are take to tech jobs naturally - their meticulous nature works well in roles where the logical processing of literally everything is an advantage, not a drawback. All the best coders I know are aspies.

Don't rule it out before you evaluate whether it might be right up your alley.

If you are interested in becoming a programmer make sure you get into a top engineering college, network while you are there, and work on projects in your spare time. Computer Science degrees from no name schools won't get you a job anymore without work history or a referral.

Well the entire CS industry went to shit this year and shows no signs of recovery, and other related industries like electrical engineering have tons of hiring freezes still.

Don't do something you don't like just for the money (you will be miserable)
Don't do something that doesn't pay well (you're not a w*man or trust fund kid on easy mode)

Career is about finding a balance between those two extremes.

Auto mechanic. That's what I would do if I was young again. My friends uncle makes a mint on foreign cars in NYC 🙂 diesel mechanic can make 100 k a year... the army can train you to do it for free 😉 lol . What I hate is that I actually went to college in my early 20s and met someone doing it. But, that wasn't my passion until I had lots of car repairs and got life experience around lots of mechanics and talked to them for hours about life. My old mechanic Plays on FB all day and some cook in the shop 🤣 it's basically fun 🐱 lol... and the young ones do all the work unless it's something like a transmission. I hate myself for not having a sweet life
