I have been doing jiu jitsu for ~10 months now and am only now really starting to get into it. After the initial thrill the middle ~6 months were a long slog that I never really enjoyed because I was so bad at it, but kept doing. The fact that it was a structural activity that repeated every few days helped keep me in the game long enough to get good so that I could actually enjoy it.
I find I use the opposite strategy while talking to women. I go out 1-2 times a week, usually get bad to mediocre results, and since there isn't anything keeping me from going back (aside from my own self motivation, which ebbs and flows) I fall off the wagon, avoid it, and then never get good.
What I really want to find is some activity or something I can do that is repeatable, has some obligation to keep going, and has a favorable guy / girl ratio. I live in New York where there is already a good guy / girl ratio, but work in an industry that is male dominated and my most time consuming hobby, BJJ, is also male dominated.
I think the best example of this would be salsa or some other kind of dance class, where you are learning a skill and the ratio is a lot better.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
