I think that talking about something you have in common (that isn’t super personal) is always a safe bet, like talking about a class you have together (“did you think the quiz was hard?” or “I really like the professor, I’m glad he’s so chill” or something like that) or if you’re in a student org together you can talk about that. On that same note, I would suggest joining a student organization or two, especially ones that have some girls in it. Other general questions that are good in college are asking what her major is, what year she is (like sophomore etc). If it seems like she isn’t interested in a conversation then don’t push it.

When it comes to knowing what to say later on, think about what you’ve said in the past that didn’t go well and don’t do it again. If you said something and a girl got offended, think about it and try to understand why it offended her, so that you’ll understand that it’s not good to say certain things. Also, if a girl is offended by something you say, apologize and learn from it, don’t just try to say “oh it’s not a big deal it’s just a joke”, because to her it is a big deal. And don’t try to rush things and text her multiple times a day when you’ve only been talking for a week, remember that she might be busy and have other stuff going on and doesn’t always have time to talk.

From my experience it really doesn't matter what you talk about it with women. It's mostly a feeling. You know when you feel attraction and the air feels heavy. Good eye contact is key.

People shit on cliche questions but there's nothing wrong with asking someone about what they study/do for a living, what they like doing in their free time, what kind of music they like and so on.

There's something that might interest you, it's a series of 36 questions from less to more personal, it was advertised as a way to fall in love or something, I don't know about that but I do know is a good sample of references for what is less intimate and what is more intimate depending of how far down the list you go.
