I lived in NYC for 16 years and I always went out alone. Start small. Go to Central Park or maybe a nice big Starbucks or something like this. Always have some sort of a purpose to keep you moving. Never go out just to hang around and harass girls. But in the beginning, you may just devise a couple of missions for yourself to help you get out your shyness/anxiety.

So the first mission is to introduce yourself to a girl. Let's say you are sitting in a Starbucks and you see some girl drinking coffee by herself and photoshopping her Instagram photos. Your mission is to go up to her with the goal of introducing yourself.

"Hi there, I just wanted to introduce myself, I'm Bob". Shake her hand, ask for her name and say it is nice meeting her. If she asks you why you are introducing yourself, tell her that you go to this place often and want all the good looking girls to know who you are. Alternatively, you can tell them that your social skills have suffered due to Covid and you are just trying to meet new people.

That's it. After that interaction you can go back to your table or stay and talk to her. When you make the goal of the interaction very small and achievable it will be less daunting than thinking "I have to take her number, make her laugh, etc etc".
