First of, dont be scared to screw it up. Things will only be awkward if you make them awkward. If she rejects you just roll with and stay classy. As for the approach, the best would time would probably after class when everyone is walking out. You could mention something about the piece she is working on and just go from there. Don't get too hung up on trying to win her over. Just have fun with the interaction

I totally understand that you don't want to take someone's seat. Fucking sucks when someone takes my seat in class as well, but if this chick is important, you should take a seat next to her and come out with your intentions right then and there. If you can't do that, then don't do it not because you're shy, but because you don't want to be rude.

Anyways, enough about basic etiquette, time to work on your body language. I'm assuming that because you can't spark a conversation with something half pretty, you lack a bit of confidence. From personal experience and from a scientific study, if you act confident, you will become confident. Much like us guys; we only judge through our eyes, but so do women. Less about looks for women however, they judge more on how a guy looks confident. If you can act wide, as in, take more elbow, leg, and walking room, the more masculine you will appear. You can start off there.

Finally, your approaching game. Your best bet is if you have yet to introduce yourself, you have to do it sooner than later. The sooner the better, because chances are, someone else will. So this is what you will do:

Go upto her and tell her "Hi, I couldn't help myself and notice how beautiful you are and I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Blahblah what's your name?

She responds

Ahh, blahblah nice... How are you liking the class so far?

Respond accordingly

What are you studying?

She responds

No way? That's awesome, I'm studying blahblah. What do you like about blah?

The trick is to talk to her confidently. You ask her open ended questions (questions that she cannot answer with just a simple yes or no question) Have a smile on your face when she is talking to you. And most importantly, make your intentions known. If by the time she has not left or has not become uninterested with the conversation, keep on pushing! This means that when you first approach her, give her a little bit of personal space (which is about 3 feet). If she is holding the conversation with you and biting, move in closer and closer. Throughout the conversation, make a smooth transition to getting close to her until you broke the personal space. When she seems uncomfortable, that is when you stop and you work from there.

After your conversation (before class) tell her (please please please don't ask her) to sit next you and act confident as if she will say yes. If she says she can't then, you did not make her feel comfortable enough.

Eventually, when she gets comfortable around you, she will sit next to you.

Remember; act confident, wide, make your intentions known and make her feel comfortable.
