I think that’s an apt way to put it but please elaborate on your definition of needy. I’m asking because I have been needy in the past. I’ve noticed times that I felt needy I was constantly trying to give more in the interaction the she was willing to give back.

Needy people are generally too concerned about themselves. This is usually because they have an insecurity, such as thinking/feeling that they're not attractive, and they think that others are the solution. Being needy means you can't truly experience the other person, you can't be in the moment. It causes you to misinterpret things incorrectly, and make mistakes on the approach.
