Powertalk is the language of socially intelligent people who understand the system and use it to their advantage. For example, an editor for Fox News may tell his reporters that they are completely independent, that he values journalistic integrity, and they should never be afraid to report the truth, because those qualities are what attracts audiences and drives advertising revenues. A reporter that is fluent in Powertalk understands that there is a very specific reason why the editor "reminded" him of all that. Fox News is very conservative, the audience is very conservative, and that he should put a right-wing slant to his reports because that is what attracts their target audience. Also, he knows that he should not do anything to offend sponsors or potential sponsors. When he shows his editor the work, he may demonstrate that he understands Powertalk by repeating some of the things such as how his work was completely independent and unbiased, and he is happy with the journalistic integrity offered to him, etc, but he made a very conservative slanting report that also caters well to sponsors. The editor recognizes this and the reporter is now first in line for promotion because the reporter demonstrated that he truly understands the business.

The reason why Powertalk exists is because plausible deniability is required. Socially intelligent people can see the system or "The Game" and they know how to work it. However, it is extremely taboo to talk about (ex: look at the the flak TRP gets from other subreddits), and sometimes may result in legal liabilities if discussed openly (particularly for business discussions). In terms of sexual strategy, you may have a girl say something like "You can come up to my apartment for a while, but you can't stay for long, I have to wake up early tomorrow". If she is Powertalking, the subtext is that she acknowledges the existence of social standards and she doesn't want to look like a slut. Also, she is checking to see if you are socially intelligent too, because a socially intelligent man would understand the rules of the game and keep their fling a secret instead of going around bragging to everybody that he scored. Her statement is completely innocuous and she has plausible deniability with any friends or acquaintances that may be around overhearing it.

In public, socially intelligent people Powertalk with each other all the time. They often throw out feelers to test if someone else would respond with Powertalk, signalling that he/she is also socially intelligent.

Ever read a character description in a book? The author doesn't flat tell you the guy is powerful, confident and rich. Instead the characters description makes slight remarks towards his height and size (powerful) or perhaps dialog with another character makes it known that they are confident.

If you read a book in straight talk - you'd find it incredibly boring. You wouldn't buy into the characters because you didn't have to figure out what they were about.

Powertalk is simply talking with a subtext. It's all about stating things indirectly, sometimes what's not said is important, the context or what can be implied. It's particularly beneficial when what you are asking for is socially unacceptable - one or the other can pretend that it was a misunderstanding if there's any offense.

Example: You meet a woman in a bar and you want to know if she's available. You ask her "So what brings you out tonight?" Translation - The context should make it clear that you've just asked her if she's looking to hook up. She responds "I was just a bit bored tonight and hanging out with my friend." Translation - no boyfriend or husband mentioned: I'm single. Bored: I'm looking to have some fun, are you interesting?

If you tried that conversation with straight talk, it would break down immediately. Similarly at work and other places, people often use power talk to work out deals that wouldn't be acceptable otherwise.
