Etiquette is quite clear upon this matter. You must not write an email. It is not the place of a gentleman to presume upon a lady with a message from a relative stranger.

You must first contact your friend and intermediary. Send him one of your calling cards. He would then send to the lady a proper letter of introduction with your card enclosed, announcing your return to the continent on a certain date, extolling your virtues, and promising to formally introduce you. Then when you have returned from your transoceanic voyage, you may contact your intermediate, who will arrange an occasion for the two of you to meet at his home (not the home of the lady, or yours). The lady will be introduced to you by your friend. It would be most improper for a man to be introduced to a lady, it must be the lady introduced to the man.

The first meeting will be little more than an introduction, whereupon she will depart forthwith. Assuming your first meeting has gone well, and you meet with the approval of the lady, she might offer her calling card, with the unspoken understanding that you will call upon her house at an appropriate time when she is receiving visitors to her parlor (time to be arranged through your mutual friend). If the woman is more reticent or bashful, she may not want to make an obvious display of her approval. She might "accidentally" leave an item behind when she departs, such as a monogrammed handkerchief. This would be a signal that you should call upon her to return the lost item.

But under no circumstances should you just write an email, assuming the same familiarity as you had when you were in school, resuming the same conversational tone as always, and say something like "Hi, our friend John Doe gave me your email address, it's been ages since I've seen you, I'd like to call you up sometime and catch up with things since college."

Email, texting and phone calls should be used as means of escalating things to a higher level of interaction. Not much you can do out of country except say "hey, what's up?"

Don't put out an email that reads, "hey I really wanna take you out but I'm out of the country, hope you don't mind waiting around for me till I get back" or carries that type of tone.

Since she's interested in you, might be best to get in contact with her a week or so before you get back. Then set up a get-together over drinks and proceed from there.

I'd wait to do anything until you are back. You're supposed to be too busy abroad doing awesome things to be spending time thinking of a girl that is supposed to be just an acquaintance.

Don't email. Don't think about her.

When you get back home, plan a night out with your friend and ask him to invite her out. "Hey my friend just got back from abroad and we're going to party tonight. You should come."

You have now been established as the center of attention and as an interesting human being (did you know only 1/3 of Americans even have a passport?) Both very big DHVs before you even see her.

Otherwise, get her out of your mind for now. And in fact, tell your friend to invite more girls out for your homecoming party. :)

And go out and have some wild experiences you can tell as kick-ass stories when you get back home! Everyone loves good stories from trips overseas.
