Guys, just cause you're sick of Charlie Sheen doesn't mean you should downvote great posts like this!

It's true, we have all the control right within our minds. Whether we allow ourselves to access it or not is entirely up to us.

I think you are giving too much credit to the power of self-control. Perhaps there are some who can cure addictions with willpower, it is sometimes believed these people weren't truly addicted (note: this is the "no true Scotsman" fallacy).

Being a member of Al-Anon, and knowing hundreds of people in Alcoholics Anonymous, NarcAnon, Debtors Anon, etc. I assure you that many people are completely unable to control their behavior patterns in certain areas of their life. To use the AA doctrine, a "normal drinker" can't understand the thinking of an alcoholic, nor can the alcoholic understand the normal drinker. One Alanon guy I knew said he was at a party with his father, a sober AA member for years. The guy had a cocktail at the social gathering while his father had coffee or something. He finished half the drink and left it, when the two of them left the party. His father said, "How did you do that?" The son had no idea what he meant. "How can you drink just half a drink and then leave it?"

Now I'll get more specific but I'm on the run and I can't write much about this at the moment, but I've given this a lot of thought. Sheen's show is a comedy scenario by Chuck Lorre that is absolutely brilliant. Charlie is the unreformed drunk and Alan is the codependent. It's AA vs. Alanon. The reference is pretty specific, there's an early episode where Charlie's "men's support group" meets, with Elvis Costello, Harry Dean Stanton, Sean Penn, etc. except they sit around and drink whiskey and smoke cigars. It's a parody of an AA meeting.

Well, anyway, I'll have to get back to this later, but the idea of self-mastery, "being master of your mind, rather than your mind being your master" is impossible for some people, at least in some areas of their life. And you who can, can hardly envision the mental states of those who can't
