How you initiated isn't so terrible, but it's that you immediately backed off. It's sort of a weird question to just throw out there, then leave. What would you have said if she knew? "Oh thanks."
It's awesome that you approached her, just keep your cool and keep the conversation up. Use things as an excuse to talk to girls, and then keep talking. Make fun of her for not knowing how to draw. Make it HER fault. The pick up line doesn't matter, it's what you do afterwards that does.
