This depends heavily on context. If you're talking about like facebooking a girl you met at a bar or something, you have to be really careful.

General advice tends to be along the lines of keeping it short, sweet, and only to set up a face to face experience. Don't have long drawn out conversations online where it is harder to build attraction because you miss out on eye contact, kino, ect. that would be part of the infinitely more effective face to face interaction.

It also tends to be somewhat of a DLV.

So I suppose you can formulate a way to initiate a conversation online by keeping in mind that it should probably be a short, goal oriented conversation. That goal being to set up a face to face experience where you can build attraction since it is really tough to do so online.
