Well I jumped the gun a bit and went on a 20 min solo mission just then to the backpacker bar/club on the street below where I live. Went much better than expected. Walked in with purpose and intention, and straight away opened up a set with a British girl who was drinking wine. I opened with "wow you are literally the first person I have ever seen drinking wine in this place, we gotta high five for that" and went into a gambit about pretentious wine drinkers. Chatted for about 7 mins, got the kino going and finished up with creating our own handshake. Then low and behold as I go to kiss her on the cheek to say goodbye she goes in for the pash. Went and got a glass of water, then opened up a blonde with "are you swedish" (lame I know but works quite well sometimes. She was a bit more reserved and shy but opened up a bit after a few mins, especially when I jokingly asked if she was a tourist or a terrorist. After these two I went for a bit of a dance but then got cold feet and bailed home. All in all a successful 20 min solo mission, would be hard to stay out solo longer than this though, need to practice.

This is the problem: only players and losers go to bars alone. So, even if the question Why are you here alone doesn't come up, you need to be prepared to come up with a good story, and reality is the best story.

So, once you are in New York, you can always tell the truth, you are here in Business, and wanted to check out the nightlife, but none of your friends had your stamina and they are all in bed sleeping after a long dy of work, or something to that effect, it establishes you some social value, and ... women like strong men.

There in your home country, you could say that you arrived there with your buddy who had to leave because of a work emergency but you remained because you work hard, and you deserve your R&R. OR something like that. Of course it would be much better if you had a buddy or two for social proof.
