I always do a walk through and see who's there. If anyone give you a weird look there is your opening say: I'm looking for the host? I'm looking for the bathroom? I need a glass?

People will generally help people out at a party from there you can open up

If it's a party you can still use indirect openers for entire groups:

If it's small enough, simply walking up and say, "Hey, I haven't met you all yet, I'm (name), I'm a friend of (person you know)," Will work.
