I'm guessing the wife thought she was providing those things, but that her husband wasn't reciprocating. The take away message for you: have standards when going long term with someone. You mentioned what you thought were the wife's preferred qualities in her husband. What are your preferred qualities in your mate? Once you know them, don't compromise, and marry the person who has those qualities. Simple as that.
