Girl here; I lurk here and help out when I can. I prefer texts. Calls are reserved for really important things, like when you find out that your guy lied and told a girl you were his cousin. But that's a different story...

Texting also gives you time to think of witty things to say. Bitches love that shit. We show each other the cute/funny things you makes say. Also, if you're on iMessage make sure you turn your read receipts off if you tend to forget to reply quickly.

A lot of guys will say call because it is more "manly" or whatever. I would actually prefer to call but a lot of girls feel more comfortable with texting so that's what I usually do. Plus, if they don't answer you don't have to deal with the awkwardness of missed calls and voicemail and all that.

It also depends on how old the girl is. I usually talk to college aged girls who pretty much exclusively text. Actual phone calls might work better for girls age 30+.
