[Question] Language Barrier

Canadian here, in Germany for exchange. In for deets.

I could guess that a club is kinda of universal for building attraction and you don't really need to talk at all. But since I don't know much German I can't really hit on women in other places.

I'm an American living in Korea for about three years. At this point, I speak Korean pretty goddamn well, but I still like to pretend I don't, at least when I first meet someone. I like to take a girl out for some drinks and then ask her to teach me Korean, and suggest starting with body parts. You can start with their hand and ask them the name for each finger, the palm, knuckles, fingernails, etc... Then move on to other body parts, like arms, legs, etc... and eventually work your way up to their face. If you can touch a girl's face, it's like a guaranteed K-close.

However, if you're looking for actual interaction and not just a little bullshit game to pass the time and practice kino, it's a bit harder. A lot of it is body language and using your hands. You don't necessarily have to dumb down your English. I personally have a big pet peeve for people who speak to foreigners like they're children. They will understand "I'm going to the bathroom" just as well as "I go bathroom." Only the second one is really condescending as fuck.

There will of course be lots of silences and pauses, but you just have to roll with it. It would be best to try and do things that don't require a lot of communication to begin with, such as going out to dance. Ain't no kind of conversations going on in a club. There you can let your body language and eyes do all the communicating.

Lastly, I've heard some of my friends hypothesize that not speaking the language in the country you are in can actually up your "exotic" factor, which can make you more interesting to a girl. I would still say that learning the language will open more doors than it closes, but not knowing the language isn't a complete killer either.

First of all: study and practice your butt off to learn that French of course! Making the effort to talk in their language, however broken, is enormously endearing to most girls, will make you seem like an interesting guy off the bat, and an extra foreign language is a skill that is wonderful to have and lasts a life time. Also, talking in another language provides a strange sense of carefree-ness somehow.

Having a girl teach you some bits of the language is a great way for funny banter by the way. Ask them to teach you local swear words, ways to colorfully insult, and of course to flirt!

The French in particular are quite self-conscious about (if not principally opposed to) speaking English, so you've chosen yourself a country where it's even MORE important to pick up the language fast than most.

That said, just start out with your crappy French as much as possible, and as soon as they realize your French is not good - after about 12 seconds I guess - just switch to English, most young people do speak it reasonably well, they just think they don't.

Now, given all that, when I find we really don't have a language that we can reasonably communicate in, I tend to just move on, I love talking with somebody so much that I get incredibly frustrating if it's impaired by this - not worth it to me, even if there's a one night stand in it.
