Went out with a female friend of mine last week, didn't realize how often girl got hit on. How do you differentiate yourself from other guys?

It's about context. Don't hit on a girl where everyone is hitting on her because then you lose your individuality. You aren't /u/zr6z instead you are "a guy at the bar." It is very difficult to overcome that.

If, however, you met her somewhere else where she rarely or never gets hit on then you are sort of like a beacon, definitely something more alluring and unique.

If you must hit on a girl at the bar, then I would say just stick to the fundamentals. Which as you mentioned you are reading in the side bar. The context is still worse than other contexts, but the fundamentals will give you the best chance of success.
