Learning how to pick people worth investing your time into is also important. It took me a good 7-8 years to realize some of the people I was hanging around were toxic. It's a bit cliche to say, but "surround yourself with people who know your worth. You don't need too many people to be happy, just a few who appreciate you for exactly who you are."

I don't have a wide circle of friends these days, but the people I do are loyal and trustworthy by nature. They don't undermine others to build themselves up, they don't spend a disproportionate amount of time gossiping and I know they share in my successes and help me out and stand by me when things aren't going so well.

If you find genuine people, it's as easy as being a good friend. Learn to listen, when to be honest, when to help out, when to ask for help.

I think it's by communicating with your actions that their well-being is important to you in and of itself. Some people will take advantage of that, in which case you just cut them off and move on, but others will reciprocate it. Just treat people the way you want to be treated. There's no tricks.
