Speak. Slowly. with pauses. It will give you time to formulate an intelligible response that doesn't sound rushed or nervous.

Next step? Approach more girls. After getting an approach out of the way, the next one is easier. Keep approaching. With her specifically? I might make eye contact with her and smile, and gauge her response. If she smiles back rather than looks away awkwardly, I might go talk to her again.

Give an example of what you mean by you were DHVing the shit out of yourself. Like do you mean you were qualifying yourself to her? If so, that's not good. You seem like you were probably bragging. If it was me I would have introduced myself then went straight to some sort of playful cold read. Something about her style, trying to guess her major, or what she did in high school.
