i have started working on being more socially dominant, an thus for example trying to shove the other person a litttle in their head. essentially leading but by also making moves that take away the initiative from the other. you might not be seen by people as a person to seriously listen to aka. shut the fuck up.

Keep your stories in context. Do not dwell on a thought to throw out in a social setting just to throw it out. Adapt to the conversation. It's a way to take the lead if you are not the leader. If you find something to say and the conversation moves on from that, back pocket your thought, and find something else to say. For instance say your buddy is talking about the time they almost got arrested and you think oh shut I can one up them with my hilarious arrest story. Then the conversation gets swindled into talking about the drink that did them in. Instead of bringing the conversation to your story start it off with that drink that just gets you every time.

My buddies are all A type personalities and I don't always take the lead, but people love good listeners sometimes just as much as a funny person and if you do it right you can be both.
