Full disclosure: i'm a girl so this is from a lady's perspective rather than a PUA's. But I (like most women) have been in this situation and have dealt with the whole range of reactions, from disgust to somewhat-unsettling arousal, so hopefully I can offer some insight.

Admitting you're on your period is generally a last-resort thing for girls; most of them don't just volunteer that info to a potential hook-up unless he's well on his way to finding out for himself. If we're not into you, we'll find another way to put you off before it gets that far. So i'd say they really were on their period (the odds aren't that huge, there's a 1 in 4 chance that a random average girl will be on her period when you meet her, as they're usually a weeklong monthly thing) or they're covering up some other temporary down-there insecurity they consider more embarrassing/awkward to explain than a period.

How to respond is all about relieving that insecurity. Act like it's no big deal and put her at ease. Let her know you're still down to have fun and she'll likely reward you. If you're ok with period sex bring it up later and keep it light/no-pressure as many girls are very hesitant about doing that with a casual hook-up. If you're not into period sex then chances are you have little to worry about; she'll probably leave her panties on unless you take the initiative to remove them.

Either way, she'll remember you were an adult about it and will likely be pretty interested in sealing the deal once her monthlies are over.
