Don't try to soften. Soften generally means lie, or manipulate in a creative way so you don't have to be 100% honest.
So much bullshit in relationships / breakups stems from trying to "soften" things.... its a terrible notion imho.

dumping anybody is a huge ego blow and there is no real way to "soften" it. You might as well just be as honest as possible.
