The fact that you have a mutual friend who is present in the situation should give you enough social proof to just be yourself and not have to worry much about it. Personally I love meeting friends of friends because talking to them and making conversation is much easier, I think largely because the mutual friend(s) makes everyone more comfortable.

Since he is friends with them, they have heard about you at least once before. He could have heard one of the girls say "I wish I could find a good guy", and he could of said "My friend academyawardwinner is an awesome guy, I'll invite him out some time!".
There is going to be no awkwardness. The only awkwardness from meeting them will be the awkwardness that you create. Girls are always meeting new people.
The only way you are going to come off as awkward is if you just sit around quiet.
