After reading seddit all week I decided to try my hand at daygame this Saturday. It gave me the impression I may need some help with social interaction.
I started out at whole foods. I opened up an older HB7 lady about the cliff bars she was getting, asking which one she recommended. We had a short exchange about how sweet they were and that it was for energy, being sweet and all. The conversation faded off and we went our separate ways.
I then opened sales girl HB6 about bone supplements. One of them was called "BONE UP" in bold letters and I just wanted to do it out of absurdity. She didn't get it, but we talked about how the supp companies came and educated them and blah blah blah... I kept asking questions and she was more than happy to answer but it was mainly just customer/sales stuff. I went to produce after that.
A cute HB7 passed me with a cool necklace and I just said "Wow, that's a cool necklace!" (dumbest opener ever) By the time I finished, she had passed me and I thought all was lost but she turned around! "Thanks! I got it from a pow wow!" A pow-wow? That's awesome! Where do they even have those anymore? "Oh it was in New York where I'm from." Awesome! I think they used to have them downtown, blah blah blah" "That's cool!" Lull in the convo, she's looking at me smiling, I'm keeping eye contact..... "So do you think there's information on the internet for that? blah blah" Ya I think so "Well I've got to go!" Great necklace!
A lull in the conversation plus I was too chickenshit to introduce myself or ask for her number. We were kind of in an awkward spot in front of the aisles, so I kept having to move. I saw another girl that had a zoo worker shirt on and thought about opening her up with an "adventurous" comment, but she was never not in the middle of something with an associate. I went to check out and this cute 35 year old HB8 mom was checking out. She was married, but I figured why not talk to her to keep things going. Made some joke about kids eating her out of house and home, blah blah blah. She actually wanted to tell me about her kids. There was an eventual lull in the conversation and we went about our business.
Next on to a department store. I was looking around dress shirts, purposely looking confused. A gothy looking HB5 sales associate came to me and asked me if she could help with anything.
You look like you're adventurous, my mom told me to come find an adventurous shirt for vacation and I can't find anything. Can you help me?
She roared with laughter and we proceeded to look at shirts for the next 20 minutes together, even though she was supposed to be in the kids section. I kept asking her what she thought of this one, or if this one was sexy, I told her that one was too big for my girlish figure (I've got very broad shoulders and a thin waist), she laughed. I touched the tattoo behind her ear and asked her about it, she giggled and told me what it was. I even made a comment about how this fabric would chafe my nipples and she looked so scandalized. Finally i went to the dressing room and she told me that I had made her day and to come find me after I had checked out to show her what I had bought. I was very comfortable with her, probably because she was just barely in my interest range and because she was a goth and I've pulled goths before, but I'm not really interested in ones below HB7 anymore. AA was minimal.
I moved on to a toystore where I flirted with the associate for a bit, but again, not really interested and toys are not my specialty. I just needed something to keep me going.
I walked into Nordstroms. As I was walking in, there was an HB8 girl sitting on the bench. I thought about going up to her and saying "You look terribly excited to be here!" but I second guessed myself and walked on. I was looking at another set of shirt when an HB8 associate called to me and asked if I was doing alright. I said yes and smiled looking up at her from the shirts, my heart started racing, I wasn't ready. She came over to me and made eye contact and started talking to me about their sale and blah blah blah. I told her I was looking for a shirt and blah blah. I tried to babble on as much as I could to keep the conversation going but there was an eventual lull and she held out her hand and said "I'm HB8"
I'm strongerfaster1 (more like weakerslower2) "Let me know what you think"
She walked around a couple times, I caught her looking at me. Then she wandered upstairs. As I was walking out, I saw another HB8 customer holding a shoe and said fuck it, walked up to her, touched her arm and said in the deepest voice I have, looking straight into her eyes,"That shoe is so you, it matches your dress perfectly." (WTF?? I'm not gay, to be fair the shoes did match her dress very well) "Oh thanks!" (looks at the price, $89.99) Now the thing is, are they on sale? Because $90 is waaay to much to pay for shoes. "Ya, there's no waaay I would either". I'm strongerfaster one (hold out hand) "I'm HB8customer" HB8customer, that's a really interesting name? How did your parents come up with that one? "Oh they were hippies" Really, did you grow up around here? "Ya, in (really liberal town in state)." Oh ya wow. Guess that makes sense (I'm an asshole). But ya I think those shoes look great! "You think so? I really like these ones as well." -Holds up shoes and shows me. I take them Ya, they're kind of blah blah blah.... lull "I think I'm going to go try these on." Ok, it was nice to meet you HB8customer.
Damn it!!! We kept eye contact for quite a while, I just couldn't think of what to say to keep the conversation going. I should have just told her that I was on my way out but that she seemed interesting and asked for a number. After that, I my AA went through the roof and I just walked around, making eye contact with women, smiling, saying hi, throwing out compliments on clothing. It was tough for me. I left feeling pretty down on myself, but at least I made it out there. Any thoughts on keeping on conversation going? Or even overcoming AA? I feel kind of dumb that I approached more sales associates (or they approached me!) than I approached actual women shopping.
Cheers.
