First off, this is a bullshit limiting belief: What the hell is "average looking?" It's largely subjective as to where the line is.

Secondly, you're misidentifying the actual value of looks. Every single person has a preference in terms of look. So do YOU. If someone doesn't fit that preference, then it's probably not going to pan out. Everyone is going to have their "market," in terms of people who go for their kind of "look." Whatever it might be.

Thirdly, what confidence does is ensure that a person doesn't shoot themselves in the foot by discouraging someone who might otherwise be interested.

I've seen guys who look like trolls, pick up girls in situations that I would never have thought possible, on a regular basis. Due to confidence. And I've seen guys who look like movie stars, shoot themselves down and reject people they were interested in (people who were throwing themselves at them). Again, due to confidence.

It's important to remember that women put a lot less weight on looks. Here's a chart from the OKCupid founder showing what age people find the opposite sex attractive, by age. The OKC blog is chock full of these tidbits as well.

Don't put as much emphasis on your looks. Instead think about presentation. This will include how you dress, how you stand, conversation, interests, passions, humor, etc. Women want the whole package if they can get it, and 'attractiveness' is only one attribute. Don't hang your hat on that checkbox.

Will being attractive help you? Yes.

Will being unattractive hinder you? Yes, as well.

But neither will be the dealmaker or dealbreaker.

You radiate insecurity from the way you write here and if that behaviour is shown out there as well. It doesn't matter how you look, you'll hit the same wall over and over again this way. I'm not gonna say that looks don't matter because you know as much as I do that atleast half the female population gets moist if they'd ever see a person like David Beckham irl. These are fantasy idols but a great many women wouldn't see him more than that. Confidence and self acceptance are 2 of the most vital things that attract women. I'll exaggerate an example: If you meet a random cute girl and all you can tell her is how life sucks, how you hate the way things are going, don't think you'll achieve anything in life, wheeping away in selfpity etc. Do you think that you are interesting to her? Not in the slightest bit. How can a woman love you if you dont even like yourself?

In the end it comes down to this. If you accept yourself and love the way you live by doing the stuff you want to do, you'll become confident eventually. Chicks dig confidence and eventually you'll become attractive to them and all you had to do to make that happen was living your life without worrying about what they might think.

Obviously, when you are goodlooking you have a +1 when cold approaching but unless you look like Shrek you do not start with -1 if you are "average" looking.

To finish off with a nice analogy I read a few mins ago somewhere else - Don't chase the butterfly. Tend to your garden (yourself) and the butterflies will come on their own.
