On Neediness: Complete disregard of what people think of you?

I'm in the middle of Mark Manson's "Models", in which it's explained about neediness, attraction and so on.

What got me wondering is a thought whether the book contradicts itself or not. In "Models", neediness is defined as being more invested in how other percieve you instead of being more invested in your perception of you.

So isn't reading "Models" (for example) needy in itself? That would mean you're trying to change yourself so others percieve you better. Maybe my vision of neediness is blurred? I always think I shouldn't care about what other people think of me, but then again - completely disregarding your reputation doesn't look like a good idea either.
