Girl does silly faces in your direction. How to not respond awkwardly?

A girl.....does a silly face (cross eyed with tongue out).

The way I responded was pretty lame. I rolled my eyes and did a not amused face -- I realised I should've smiled or did something more fun/positive.

My question to you is this: what would you do in my situation?

Look back to see if she's doing it to someone else? Assume attraction and take a risk by responding regardless? Or just play it safe and smile at her?

First you were a stick in the mud. Now you're over-thinking it. You're not thinking of it from the perspective of what would be fun for HER. You're trying to backwards engineer the "most effective thing to get the best result," but you're not trying to walk in her shoes. Aside from the fact you realize that you killed the fun, anyway. It's a good sign that you have that awareness: a lot of guys don't have that, and it's really hard to improve without it. As to your initial suggestions:

Looking back to see if she's doing it to someone else, is a reaction based in insecurity and fear, as if you are not fun enough to play with.
Responding to her with fun is not "assuming attraction and taking a risk," it's just being FUN.
Just smiling at her is not "playing it safe," it's reacting to her in a way that deflates the fun and makes it come off as if you'll let someone walk all over you.

Nope. The better responses would be in amplifying what she did or just going straight for the unexpected shock factor. Something like:

Random and more complicated funny face. Something that takes both hands and maybe part of your arm. [Category: Amplification]
Put the V-sign up to your mouth and stick your tongue out. And really cheese it up. Perhaps make it come off like you accidentally or unknowingly did something dirty while trying to come up with a funny face. (The sign for eating a girl out.) [Category: Shock factor]

In either category, having the attitude of playfulness and not taking yourself too seriously will make the response work well.

After second thought, I realised my awkwardness stems from my childhood experience. I remember in primary school when a girl waved at me, I waved back... Just to find out she was waving to someone behind me lol.

Since then I guess I got a bit traumatised and never got used to girls doing quirky faces at me.

You're not getting at the issue here. It's not that you "never got used to quirky faces." This event is about insecurity and doubt: you thought she was giving you the good feelings but she was sending them to someone else.

Knowing that your knee-jerk reaction stems from that past event, are you going to allow the past to keep you from enjoying the future?
