There is a right amount of awkwardness. A small amount is always good, since when someone shows akwardness and remorse others perceive him as more trustworthy, their actions as more forgiveable. Such individuals tend to be more social.
Even if you don't feel the awkwardness, people around you still can. Which is called vicarous embarassment.
Feeling of awkwardness is actually really similar to physical pain. At least in the brain they happen in the cortexes connected to physical pain.
The fight or flight response actually, is activated by social challanges.
Blood pressure increases causing you to overheat. Oxygen increases and digestion shuts down causing butterflies in the stomach. The body retracts back into a natural fetus position. (Which means it's harder to keep a great manly posture). Cold fingers since blood is flowing into more important parts of the body, and hands will start shaking.
Oxytocin otherwise known as love hormones is responsible for feelings of trust and alleviating depression. (There are sprays out there with oxytocin).
We actually remember negative social interactions much better unfortunately, than positive ones. QUote from Eleanor Roosevelt: "You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do." You are not the first thing on anyone else's mind. They are worried about themselves enough.
