What we have gone through is a decrease in size, but a massive increase in efficiency and specialization.

This is not a bad thing.

So it's not the size, it's what you do with it. type of thing then?

In terms of brains... yes.

The volume of brain we lost was mainly at the back of the head, which are the centers related to sight and movement. These were the area's that helped us spot predators.

As the world changed and man evolved spears, tools, and complex social groups, the need to spot lions and mega predators from a distance decreased.

Instead we evolved much more specialized areas of the brain related to tools, language and other higher functions. We started to use tools to modify and adapt to our environment rather than just brute force.

Kick around on Netflix and you'll find a few good BBC doco's on this subject.

On the last page of the article, it states that our brains are actually growing again, the likely cause is nutrition. Why do you think that is?

[–]Clauderoughly 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In the last 200 years we have made massive advances in medicine, food and science. We now have the most energy rich diet, that humans have ever had in our history.

There were also things like the Columbian exchange, which gave us access to new and high energy foods (like potatoes)

The last time that humans made that sort of advance, was when we discovered cooking, which gave us a huge boost in available food energy. As a result our disgestive tract shunk by about 30%, as we didn't need to grind out the food for energy like we used to.

Human brains are changing because we are using them much more than we ever have, and we have the access to the energy to drive them.

That is not how evolution works, the only time we get a consistent change/mutation is when the others die out.

For that analogy to make any sense, we'd have to talk about the number of transistors that a modern day computer chip can hold, way more.

In the case of our brains, the transistors are much less than what they once were.

not devolving, more like atrophying.

Bacteria are pretty optimized as well, they don't have large brains to worry about, they also get laid easy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you didn't know, bacteria are asexual.

FWIW I'm not downvoting you.

lol, yeah it's weird the way people use down votes even in trp. I've been in debates where it's clear that we are the only two reading the posts and I've been voted down on everyone of them and they have not been. I mean really, who are they trying to persuade?

Anyway, let's drop these analogies. I'll start with a clear statement. If I were given the choice of having a tennis ball in volume of brain matter, the only thing I have to do would be to eat 300 more calories a day. I'd gladly do that.

elephants must be fucking geniuses then...

I'm not going to read the article, 'till you tell me, what's so redpill about it.

[–]Gstreetshit -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

brain size =/= intelligence

[–]FortunateBum -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's pretty clear that intelligence is not a helpful trait at a certain point.

A lot of guys today do poorly with women because they over-intellectualize things. There's a reason nerds are known for having poor social skills.
