Hey man, unfortunately what you are asking would need a 50 page answer to be complete. I will give you a small diagram which will cover most of the major points and give you some killer techniques.

1) Make random observations and talk with everybody -> Self confidence 2) Use lower pitch in your voice, and downward tonality while speaking to a girl. -> The "Real Man" 3) Invest in yourself, in your style, your body etc. -> Attraction 4) Make humour, laugh, stay cool. 5) Express yourself making good use of your body language. Don't just stay motionless. Move your f*cking hands :D. Grab her attention. 6) Look at her 2/3 of the time approximately. 7) Don't try too hard!!!

First piece of advice, get out of your comfort zone. The fact that you feel afraid is good, fear keeps us alive but for this situation its not needed. The key is make eye contact, smile and start with small talk or a minor compliment. What is your goal in this situation? Are you trying to have fun and meet new friends?

Hey man, this is pretty common problem guys have. Hanging with friends is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, you're more comfortable at the bar or club. On the other hand, you feel awkward hitting on women in front of them. Walking around just kills time but you don't know what else there is to do. It's good to be versatile. I'm a little biased since I teach club dance, and I think dancing is one great thing you can do. But dancing, flirting, and conversing is all about creating the party instead of looking for one. With your friends, you can break out cheesy dance moves, create a fun atmosphere, and attract women into your circle.

Another thing that can help improve things is picking the right venue, so you might want to explore new places. I'm actually writing up a draft on my club dance blog about these kind of venues, but try smaller club (you might have to hop a few in a night), a small bar with some live music, or, if you're not getting too old, a college bar with specific celebration nights (frosh night, liberal arts night, etc). The guy/girl ratios are better too.
