From my experience, smiling is incredibly important and it really helps if you develop a "good" smile. It is really difficult to do that if you are trying to copy someone, no one's face is identical (unless you are copying an identical twin) so a smile you see on a celebrity's face may not look good on you.

To improve your smile is relatively simple: Go stand in front of the mirror and smile at yourself. Notice how far your lips move (if you show too much gum), notice if the smile touches your eyes (this part is key because it taps into eye contact). If you don't like what you see or think you can do better, expirement. How? Laugh. Then chuckle, and see what your smile looks like when you are chuckling.

It may take a little time (a day to a week) but you can vastly improve your appearance with a better smile...also, more so than the eyes a good smile is imperative if you want to be more photogenic in pictures.
