Common mistakes people make, I'll be happy if I get an SO, I'll be happy if I make more money, I'll be happy if I get a better car. All this is putting emphasis on a future event being better than the present. There is no such thing as the future, it doesn't exist yet, therefore dreaming about it and calling it better than the present will not make you happy. Only the present will make you happy, presence of mind is the only thing that will make you happy. Not some future event, not some future milestone. Accept the present now and work on becoming a better person now, only then will you be happy.

Let me give you an example, every Virgin dreams about having sex and makes it this huge deal, then most of us have sex and then are like, wait thats it? It's because we made it into this great big deal, something bigger than it is. Having an SO is great Yea, but it's not the only thing that will make you happy, be happy going on dates, enjoy the flirting, the mystery, the fun. Don't look down the road and say if only I have an SO I'll be happier. No you won't, because you'll just replace it with something else once you do. Be happy today, happiness is a state of mind, not a destination

I can relate to how you're feeling. Though sometimes I still feel like that I think it's important to think about what YOU have going on right now. Someone put it in a way I really liked: live your own adventure, let her join for the ride.
