Stop thinking about that situation that could have end in the best sex ever, because its gone. Look forward and learn from your mistakes. Next time you see a girl that is contastanly looking at you take action instantly without much thinking. I know it's a lot of pain to go up to a group of girls and try to talk to that one specific girl, but fuck it, if you fail you won't die and if you succed you will maybe end up in hot sweaty sex with her. Fear will never go away.

That wasn't dumb and useless, in fact your behaviour was completely normal.

That said, the only advice I can give you is to practice chatting with strangers until you feel like you've become good at it.
