South Korea, or Japan. As a native english speaker you would immediately have a group of people interested in meeting you. Asian culture is also different enough from ours that you'll have a great opportunity for personal growth. Also, especially Japan, the crime rate is really low. And also, for your health, living in any country besides the US and a few others, will help you lose an easy 15lbs.

Where would I go.. if it was my first time living abroad?

Berlin. Cheaper than most Western European capitals. Multi-cultural and indie. Most people age 35 or younger speak conversational english.

Eastern Europe is just a bit too wild for a first place. Your smoke detector's gotta be on all the time until you adapt. That's no way to let loose.

(Living in Europe for the last 3 years in 4 different cities. Just starting my 5th city. Travelled to 18 of the countries.)
