I would like TRP's thoughts on whether I did the right thing in a "love square" dilemma. /relationships didn't respond much.

Background: I dated Ex1 for roughly one year 6 years ago while in undergrad. She is the typical North American Princess - type: Loves clothes, shoes, maintaining her hair, nails, etc. She is fun when she wants to be, but generally introverted, antagonistic, and negative. We had a tumultuous and rocky relationship that I ended fairly abruptly after the jealousy, gas-lighting, co-dependency, and arguments became too much for me to handle. I don't think Ex1 ever experienced being the one being broken-up with and she took it hard. She attempted to win me back several times over the past 6 years in different forms. We attempted to rekindle the relationship 3 years ago, but it lasted roughly 6 months after old patterns re-emerged and I was unhappy. She continues to be a staple of a social group of some of my friends' girlfriends, although we are no-contact.

Ex2 and I started dating 2 years ago. We got along great initially. She was a recent immigrant to my country and we lived in different cities but my work schedule was light at the time and we made it work. She is very different from Ex1 in personality: always happy, easy-going, extroverted, and fun-loving, although they have the same type of look I prefer.

ExBFF was Ex1's "single-party-friend." That is, she was the girl Ex1 would re-connected with whenever she wasn't in a relationship to go out shopping, tan, and party with. I never liked her because she was heavily into the party scene (i.e., clubbing, long-weekend girls-only trips, lighter - as well as harder - drugs, etc). Ex1 always spoke very highly of her and discounted the stories I heard from mutual friends. For what it's worth, she was never really around when Ex1 and I dated, nor played a part in our relationship - for better or worse.

Drama: Ex2 and I were dating for about 6 months at the time that it came up in casual conversation that ExBFF (who was current BFF at that time) hung around a mutual friend group as Ex2 a few times. Out of respect for my girlfriend I told her that she is very good friends with Ex1 as a matter of full disclosure. I also mentioned that I didn't like the girl based on her heavy drug use and questionable social scene. It wasn't a big deal as they were just acquaintances.Somehow, Ex1 found out that her BFF was friendly with my new girlfriend and wigged-out. Ex1 erupted on BFF and they were no longer friends because of the connection between Ex1, BFF, Ex2 to me.

Ex2 and I eventually broke up because my work schedule became increasingly demanding and I could only visit her once or twice per month. She, however, was living in the big city and still caught up in the exploration of a new country, new life, new friends and often cancelled/re-arranged plans to accommodate her growing social life. I became more and more resentful and sad. She had actually never visited me in the town I worked in. It was completely on me to make the effort to see her. She began separating out her friend-group from me and was basically getting ready to cut me off. It was a heartbreaking situation for me as we were in love (at least I thought so), and had vacationed overseas together several times, met each other's families (I even visited her dying grandfather with her so he could meet me before he died), etc. I became indignant and resented her decisions and I broke up with her after nearly a year of dating and had gone our separate ways - although she had already checked out.

I wasn't aware of the three-way drama between the women this until ExBFF contacted me. ExBFF had got a hold of my contact info through social media and sent me a message outlining the whole convoluted mess. Ex1 was fiercely territorial and jealous and ExBFF explained how it all went down. Now, however, she wanted to grab a drink a bar the coming weekend.

Based on what I knew of her, I strongly believe that ExBFF's intention was to hook-up with me (the extent to which I don't know) as a way of exacting revenge on Ex1. We both knew that Ex1 would completely melt-down if that happened. I also knew that it would make its way to Ex2, who would also be very upset. My initial thought was to fuck ExBFF (who is a very attractive women, btw) as a way to try to exorcise whatever resentment and anger I had towards how my relationships with Ex1 and Ex2. Several friends encouraged me to do it. I admit that I would have had such a rush seeing the fallout amongst these three women, especially my exes.

My Decision: I decided to politely decline the drink offer and suggested we no longer communicate out of respect for the relationships I had in the past with Ex1 and Ex2. She begrudgingly agreed that would probably be the best thing to do.

A part of me wanted that revenge over my exes in one fell swoop, but instead I just decided to text Ex1 (we hadn't spoken in many months) and let her know that her ExBFF was probably trying to get back at her through me as a courtesy. She was thankful and expressed how she no longer associates with many of her "party-girl" friends from the past. I didn't delve into any of it, and just went back to our usual non-communication. I believe I took the high-road, and I think Ex1 and Ex2 appreciate it, although I must concede that I took it moreso to exemplify to them my moral character in "the best revenge is living well" type of way. Nonetheless, I do feel good for not falling into the trap of ExBFF, causing a shit-storm, and allowing them all to collectively come to the conclusion that I'm a piece of shit.

Final Question: So, Reddit, did I do the right thing, or should I have hooked up with ExBFF to piss off Ex1 and Ex2?

tl;dr: My [28M] Ex#1[28F] broke up with her ExBFF[28F] because she became friends with my Ex#2[26F]. ExBFF wanted to hook-up (I believe to get revenge), but I declined the offer and a chance to 1) hook up with a very attractive (albeit damaged) women, and 2) get my own revenge on two ex-girlfriends who treated me poorly in our relationships. What are your thought? Did I do the right thing?
