Nope. That's very uncomfortable. Invite them into your group or at least try something more light and engaging if you're trying to join another. You clearly weren't invited and made them uncomfortable and you didn't seem to participate.
If you're really inexperienced at approaching people, the fact that you did something could be good, but you have a lot to learn.
If you haven't already, you need to read, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.
