I asked two girl friends of mine on which was the best way to approach a random girl on my highschool (I'm 17).

Your first mistake was asking two high schoolers.

Of course not.

Asking someone out you just met is ridiculous. That's like saying you're going to go to a used car lot and buy a car without testing it out or finding out anything about the car.

What the hell are they even talking about? Defend? This doesn't make sense.

Her friends aren't her. They might put peer pressure on her but ultimately, she'll speak for herself.

and then suggested I talk 'her' up on Facebook beforehand, and when I see 'her' at school, say hi, and ask for her number and then go out.

Load of crap. Don't open someone on FB that you've never met. These days, FB is like a phone number. You can text, video call, phone call, all over FB.

Do you call strangers on the phone that you've never met and hope to warm them up for a date that way?

And then they propose just walking up to her and basically just grabbing her number before leaving almost immediately. No.

This whole thread has gone off the rails. Here's what you do.

You pay attention when you're in public.
When you're around people, you can use this information in conversation with people. Even something as simple as sharing a basic observation can be ridiculously powerful because most people sleepwalk through life not paying attention. So be aware of what's going on around you. What are people wearing, saying, and doing?
Make sure your mood is good when you chat people up. An authentic smile does wonders. Perhaps think of something to amuse yourself as you interact with people.
You can walk up to her and her group, say hi, and use your observations from there. You open the whole damn group.
Forget about any big plans to ask any particular girl for a number. She might reveal herself to be fucking lame in person. And another girl in that group might show a lot of interest and be pretty cool. You never know.
Take it from there. If you want to chat with that one girl in particular, observations will probably give you something specific to say to her. Worse comes to worse, you can always ask her about what she's doing right then.
