Think logically. What's the worst that would happen if you get shot down? Maybe a day of feeling the cringe.

Try for a conversation, not a phone number. Getting a number and running off will not garner you much success, women hand out numbers all the time, it means very little. Work on your skills of talking and more importantly, listening. Adjust your openers to the situation.

Also what is your end game...do you want a date, kiss, sex??? Know what you want. Every conversation naturally has a opener (ice breaker), rapport building (comfort)/flirting (sexual escalation), then the close (phone number/kiss/potentially sex)

Also depends on how much time you have and gracefully have an excuse to leave

Don't say that. That's too intense. I would just say "hey how are you"?

Yesterday I was at a huge BBQ and I couldn't bring myself to approach this beautiful girl and get her number.

Don't think of it in terms of "getting her number." Just focus on having a conversation.
